Sue & Paul's Alaska Travel Adventure
Day 6, Bird watching float trip on the Kenai River and then to Homer (5/19)
We got up at 4 AM, which is sunrise in Alaska.  We met our guide at 5:30 and were on Skilak Lake by 6 AM.  It was 32 degrees, but we were dressed accordingly with layers and heavy wool socks.
The trip on the Kenai River was great with sun all morning and ended at noon at Bings Landing with a balmy 62 degrees.  Our host, Ken Marlow (marlow@alaska.net) is very familiar with the river system and its critters.  He provides float trips for fishermen and birdwatchers (separate trips).  Most of the trip we floated and Ken used oars to guide the boat. We enjoyed hot chocolate early in the trip.  For lunch he gave us smoked salmon on crackers, sparkling cider, and chicken salad sandwiches.  On the river we saw three bald eagle pairs, in their nests, common loons, red-throated loons,  many types of ducks, trumpeter swans, terns, just to name a few.  We also saw a beaver and many beaver lodges.  After the trip, we drive down to Homer.  In Homer we stayed at an old 15x30 log cabin (see photo below) that has been 'improved' and added-on.  We saw quite a few moose on the way here and one walked out right in front of our car.  Luckily Paul was paying attention and braked in time.  A sign said that 321 moose have been road-killed on the Kenai Peninsula that year.
